For lots of people, most days are spent indoors looking at computer screens. If it isn’t an office environment is could be industrial.

Although now I spend much of my time in an office (and sell them too) I have had numerous jobs since I was 16 looking to earn my way between school and college during vacation breaks.

My first job as a 16 year old was working at a company called Dema Glass packing glassware in to boxes.

Then the jobs really did start to vary, from steel foundries, sandwich and food manufacturing, cardboard and packaging factory work, boiled egg factory (yes, they do exist), window frame manufacturing and the best one; delivering beer over the summer period.

Once I had graduated from college, the manual work stopped and I started to work in property.

The problems most people share usually consists of fatigue, boredom, monotonous routine and stress.

This can have an affect on our cognitive performance.

If you find satisfaction, reward and happiness form spending time on a project whereby that is all you think about for that period of time can make a very big difference to your mental well being.

Socializing

It is true that the Mediterranean diet has been proven to help with cognition and health but what really shocked the researchers was that just simply taking time out to eat meals with friends and family had a massive impact on cognitive function, and in turn longevity.

Therefore, if you dive straight in front of the TV with a microwave meal or a take out for one by yourself you are missing a big trick.

Even a meal between room mates helps. You can discuss your day, get the days events off your chest and clear the air. It will relieve stress and tension while being able to get the weight off your shoulders.

Sleep

I bet, if you are like me, you do not get sufficient sleep. I am an absolute twat for this.

Working all day, commuting for hours, writing for hours, trying to hit the gym, boozing at weekend and trying to squeeze in rugby leaves few precious hours for sleep.

And I am a darn good sleeper too.

I tear myself from the bed in the morning and spend 2 hours behind the wheel sipping coffee staring down the freeway of oblivion.

I am a zombie come 2pm and the simplest and possible cheapest way to enhance cognitive function is to merely close you eyes and drift away.

There’s direct correlation with sleep and health. Have you often felt run down then you get ill resulting in time off work? This can be a nightmare if you are self employed or your contract of employment does not cover sick days.

Much of it could have been prevent ed if you just got 8 hours per evening in bed asleep. That is 8 hours in bed ASLEEP, not in bed watching Game of Thrones or Dogfart videos.
