Foods High In Lutein Can Improve Attention & Cognitive Function

A recent study by researchers from the University of Illinois, US. have discovered that people who posses a higher level of lutein have brains that perform on par with people younger to themselves and their peers.

Foods that include lots of lutein include spinach, kale and avocado.

This research was published in the journal Frontiers in Ageing Neuroscience.

The study comprised of an examination of 60 adults who’s ages ranged between 25 and 45 years.

Lutein levels were analysed and each participant performed tasks that could be measured by electrodes which were on their scalp by the neural activity evaluating their attention.

The results showed that those participants with high levels of lutein demonstrated neural activity that was similar to people who were younger than themselves rather than their equally aged peers who had lower levels of lutein.

It seems that lutein has a protective role against cognitive decline, this data suggests that those with high lutein levels can complete tasks by utilizing more cognitive resources.

With this in mind, it should be encouraged that we eat more foods which contain higher levels of lutein such as the avocados, kale and spinach as already mentioned to help benefit our lives.

Yet, the trials are not stopping here.

There’s a thirst to understand how an increased consumption of foods rich in lutein can affect overall cognitive function such as learning and memory rather than just focusing on attention.
