My Bodybuilding.com Signature Series Pre Workout Review First Look:


It has been a long, first week back after the holiday season, and to put it mildly it has been difficult.

The day following new years day really had me questioning my ethics and morals.

I felt low, used and spat out by the big booze monster.

Working out was not high on the list of my agenda.

However, we all know a session in the gym can correct a multitude of sins, and tonight, I will be doing just that. Especially as I couldn’t resist a few drinks last night over dinner…

So, tonight, I will need an extra push to motivate me.

With this pre workout from one of the world’s most values domain names (probably?), I am expecting good things.

Yet, first impressions aren’t overly inspiring…

Overall the packet does look a bit low rent and is a world away from the eye catching offerings fro the likes of 4GAUGE.

Caffeine – It stimulates the central nervous system (CNS), heart, muscles, and the centers that control blood pressure to give you an extra boost and hit that PB.

Caffeine Anhydrous is the purest form of caffeine so always look out for it.

This is found in 4 Gauge which is the best pre-workout.

It is also found in Instant Knockout which is the best fat burner available at present.

Potassium – An electrolyte that helps your nerves function and muscles contract.

Magnesium – Research into magnesium supplementation also increased testosterone production in men.

Calcium – Results show that training results in increased testosterone levels in athletes and that the increase is greater if accompanied by calcium supplementation.

However, calcium supplements are also known to increase artery plaque which in the long term can cause cardiovascular problems.

Taurine – It has been touted that Taurine can help mental performance.

Early clinical research suggested that taurine, in combination with caffeine, glucuronolactone, and B vitamins, can improve attention and reasoning in adolescents, but does not improve memory.

However, there is insufficient evidence to prove this is always the case.

L-Citrulline – This is used as a sports performance and cardiovascular health supplement. L-Citrulline supplementation results in reduced fatigue and improved endurance for both aerobic and anaerobic prolonged exercise.

An increase in growth hormone has been noted with exercise, but not at rest.

L-citrulline boosts nitric oxide production in the body. Nitric oxide helps your arteries relax and work better, which improves blood flow throughout your body.

Supplementing can help lower blood pressure in people with pre-hypertension.

This is often found in the best pre workouts.

To supplement L-citrulline to enhance sports performance, take 6,000 – 8,000 mg of citrulline malate about an hour before exercise.

Beta-alanine  – Supplementation of this non essential amino acid aids the production of carnosine. That’s a compound that plays a role in muscle endurance in high-intensity exercise.

That said, studies have not exactly been positive nor entirely conclusive.

Leucine – Leucine is an amino acid which is vital for muscle repair and growth.

Leucine itself is an activator of the protein known as mTOR, which then induces muscle protein synthesis.

Dose:

One scoop before your workout.

This would total 14,000mg – this is not too bad at all.

In fact it compares well to many of the best pre workout supplements which will offer over 15,000mg.

Benefits & Effects:

There’s a good number of effective ingredients in this pre workout and a good overall dose.

Of the eight total ingredients, six offer proven performance enhancing benefits.

  • Calcium
  • Leucine
  • Citrulline
  • Caffeine

Each of the above are often found in the pre workout supplements.

How Did It Feel?

I didn’t really feel any benefits. I felt a bit more awake, this was probabaly due to the Caffeine which has a strong dose.

I felt the Beta Alanine too, it made my lips tingle.

Negatives:

So, seeing that six of eight ingredients is beneficial, you would think there is not much to complain about.

Disappointingly though, there’s a few issues which surprise me.

Citrulline is under dosed by 1000mg to offer performance benefit.

Taurine offers no proven benefit, nor does Beta Alanine.

Then, Calcium, while it is useful, if supplemented over the long term, it can cause artery plaque which can cause cardiovascular issues which may lead to a stroke.

This has some great headline ingredients included and a good daily serving which chases the best pre workout supplements.

So, on the face of it, apart from two ingredients that have no body of proof that they can increase performance, it all looks good.

However, there is a minor issue regarding Citrulline being under dosed by 1000mg to be effective.

Then it does also leave out a number of other, proven ingredients that should have been included to produce a much better supplement.

  • Coconut water
  • Theanine
  • Rhodiola
  • Carnitine
  • B12
  • B6
  • Zinc

Due to that, there are  superior products available due to this omitting a large number of proven ingredients that are present in many of the best pre workout supplements

There is a better product than this that will get you fired up and cause hell in your chosen sport.
