Sad Passing Of Former Mr. Scotland
A former Mr. Scotland of Paisley has sadly passed.
Alex Whelan is reported to being a well-known and well loved character of the area who died of pneumonia aged 84.
Alex’s son, Alex junior set up a local gym called Pro-Life in 1990 and his father passed on his knowledge as an instructor to many of the members, of which some turned to bodybuilding themselves.
Alex Whelan served in Germany as part of his National Service in the 1950’s and worked for the Tennants Brewery as a Sales Manager, whilst being a pioneer for bodybuilding in a pre-steroid era when bodybuilding did not have the popularity that it does today. His interest was triggered when he took some time out from football following an injury, a local butcher at the time opened up a gym (one of the first in the area) and Alex started lifting weights.
Alex then went on to compete in the Mr. Universe in London a couple of years after Sean Connery had represented. His love for fitness continued up until barely 6 months ago when he kept training for 5 days per week at 6am with his wife, Jean.
His son, Alex Junior also competed and won a Mr. Scotland title.
His son, is said to be overwhelmed by the touching tributes to his dad, pouring in from members past and present at his Pro-Life Fitness Centre, in New Sneddon Street, and on social media.
