Mental focus
Weight training, lifting and contact sports are a serious business, and if you want to be successful you have to have the correct mental attitude and focus. One simply cannot afford too divide one’s attention between training or performance with anything else.
Try to establish a ‘trigger’ that sets you off to focus on the task in hand. It is something that works for me whilst on the field and in the gym, it enables me to dominate when there is no room for compromise – get all of your concerns and problems out of your mind when it’s time to perform.
When you are in the gym your focus must peak for each set, for the duration of each set you must become part of it, nothing else matters other than the completion of that set. When you are out in the field, nothing else must matter than beating your opposite number, harbor the intensity. Ensure you give all.
Do not feel that when you are warming up or on a lighter weight that you concentration and focus can be lacking, this is when mistakes happen, when injuries can occur and when you can fail. In turn this can have a massive effect psychologically and put hinder your confidence and progress.
