Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals Testosterone 21 First Look
On an immediate investigation, I can see that the transparent bottle allows me to see the hard, blue pills inside. These are compressed tablets shaped as bullets (not discs) and appear to be coated to make them extremely smooth. Overall, each tablet is slightly smaller than the typical ’00’ sized capsule. However, we’ll come on to the tablet-capsule conversation later.
The label itself has a slight metallic tinge to it, and is quite simple to read and understand what the product is designed to do. After all, it does stipulate on the front exactly what you are hoping to experience:
- Increased testosterone levels
- Enhanced strength and energy
- Improved libido
We are assured by the label that this is also a high-potency product, again, this is a conversation for later.
As I turn the bottle around, there is a lengthy block of text explaining the benefits of each included ingredient. Whether anyone would read this text-heavy panel is anyone’s guess, but it does offer a level of educated reasoning why you should use the product.
Anyway, as I sign off the first look section I’ll end the piece by saying the company is based in Georgia, USA. However, I cannot establish whether this product is suitable for vegans or vegetarians. There isn’t any mention of allergens, either. Proceed with caution…
Understanding why we would want to optimize Testosterone
Testosterone (17-beta-hydroxy-4-androstene-3-one) is the male sex hormone produced in both male testicles and adrenal glands/ovaries of women, playing an integral role in puberty for boys as well as being essential for male sexual functions and the production of sperm production. As one ages, their levels decrease.
Men with low testosterone may notice their libido decline and experience difficulty getting an erection, as well as issues sleeping and thinking clearly, leading them down a path toward depression and anxiety. Athletes and bodybuilders sometimes use synthetic testosterone, known as anabolic steroids, in an attempt to build muscle mass or enhance appearance; this misuse can have both short-term and long-term adverse health impacts such as blood clots or prostate cancer.
Studies have demonstrated the power of diet and exercise to maintain adequate testosterone levels, thereby protecting against obesity, high triglyceride or cholesterol levels, and diabetes, as well as reduced levels of nitric oxide that helps open blood vessels.
Introducing Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals Testosterone 21
Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals is an all-in-one manufacturer that can take any idea from conception to fulfillment. They have their own manufacturing facilities and have products featured in many stores across the USA, be those online or brick-and-mortar. They have a huge line of brands, and products for sale with cover every perceivable base. This includes prohormones, basic vitamin supplements and fat burners, not to mention test boosters.
However, not all is perfect for Hi-Tech.
Hi-Tech is fighting back against the government’s exaggerated accusations in court and believes they will be vindicated when all the facts have come out. Hi-Tech stands in stark contrast to large pharmaceutical corporations which contribute millions of dollars annually to political campaigns; instead they produce high-quality products tailored specifically towards fitness, nutrition, and healthy lifestyle enthusiasts like themselves.
Hi-Tech filed their lawsuit in federal court on May 2, alleging that the FDA engaged in an unlawful campaign of intimidation to force them to destroy products containing 2-Aminoisopheptane (2-AMHA), an ingredient naturally present in walnut trees and Kigelia Africana fruits that has long been used by consumers as part of dietary supplements without ever leading to serious adverse events.
Exploring the Ingredients in Testosterone 21
Considering we have read the bottle, and their section regarding the reasons why each ingredient is included, I’m expecting good things. So let’s dive in.
The first thing to note is that there are only 4 ingredients…
Fadogia Agrestris – 1200mg
Fadogia Agrestris has long been used in West African traditional medicine to strengthen physical stamina, rejuvenate the body, treat illnesses and infections, improve skin tone and texture, and boost metabolism. Due to these health benefits, Fadogia Agrestris is becoming an increasingly popular choice among athletes and bodybuilders looking for natural ways to add variety to their workout regimes.
The roots of this plant contain numerous chemicals, such as alkaloids, saponins, and flavonoids.
In folklore, it is considered a natural aphrodisiac, this herb is often utilized by men seeking to enhance their sexual performance. Furthermore, it has been identified to increase blood testosterone concentrations, it is believed that this rise in testosterone contributes to the increased sexual desire.
However! And, this is a big point. The study was using rats, and not humans.
Tongkat Ali – 400mg
Supplements like Tongkat Ali can help restore testosterone levels to enhance your workout performance or enhance sexual desire safely.
Tongkat Ali can increase testosterone through its quassinoids which work to release more testosterone in the body. They may also lower binding proteins like sex hormone-binding globulin which free up more testosterone for use. Furthermore, Tongkat ali may help increase production of androgen precursors such as DHEA.
Tongkat ali is an adaptogen, meaning that it helps the body cope with physical, emotional, and biological stressors. Dopamine production increases, providing aphrodisiac effects while increasing libido.
This 2013 study found that 200mg of tongkat ali daily increased testosterone levels in human subjects.
Ashwagandha – 600mg
Ashwagandha is an ancient medicinal herb with powerful benefits to offer; from increasing energy levels and relieving anxiety and stress to encouraging restful sleep and even improving cognitive performance in certain populations.
One study demonstrated that when participants took supplements with ashwagandha root extract for 30 days, their stress levels became more manageable than those taking a placebo pill. Researchers likened its benefits to those found in antidepressants or other commonly prescribed treatments for anxiety and depression.
Further studies suggest that Ashwagandha can increase testosterone and DHEA-s and promote muscle growth at a dose of 600mg daily over 2 months.
Zinc – 50mg
Zinc is an essential mineral essential to childhood development, immune function, and wound healing. Zinc should ideally come from foods like beans, seafood, and fortified products. But if your condition interferes with how your body absorbs zinc – for instance, bariatric weight loss surgery, Crohn’s disease, or ulcerative colitis) or you follow a plant-based vegetarian/vegan diet where animal products are the main source of zinc – supplements may be necessary; pregnant women and young children also require extra zinc supplementation to support their development. Zinc deficiency occurs throughout the world including in the USA. Men with hypogonadism are at risk of severe and moderate zinc deficiency.
Zinc citrate has the highest rate of absorption among all zinc compounds approved for use as supplements and food. It absorbs even better when taken on an empty stomach and may counteract phytic acid’s effects – which impedes mineral absorption – present in certain plant foods, like bran.
This study published in 1996 demonstrates that zinc supplementation can help increase testosterone levels in men with a marginal zinc deficiency, but are otherwise normal.
The Benefits of Testosterone 21
While this testosterone booster does have a small number of ingredients compared to many other products, 75% of the ingredients do have evidence supporting their use to improve testosterone levels, and as such, help optimize numerous health parameters.
Interestingly, fadogia is included, why they did this is a mystery because there aren’t any human studies showing that it can improve testosterone. This is a shame because there are quite a few further ingredients that could have been included such as vitamin D, or even fenugreek.
Negative points
As already pointed out, only 75% of the included ingredients are supported by evidence to have a benefit on testosterone production. Furthermore, that 75% only comproses of 3 ingredients. At least these three ingredients are at the correct doses, as required to be effective. Another issue is that in the UK these are priced at around £37-39 per bottle which includes 30 servings. In the USA it is priced around $50.
From my experience, fewer ingredients means fewer manufacturing costs, so really, it should be cheaper.
Furthermore, the bottle says that it should take 3-4 weeks for optimal results, but at least one of the studies saw results over 8 weeks.
Dose Guidelines
You are required to take 4 of these bullet-shaped tablets daily. This contains a total of 2250mg daily.
This makes me wonder why we have to take so many tablets.
I know that a single ’00’ capsule can hold around 745mg, or maybe a slightly bit more, so realistically you may be able to fit all of these ingredients within 3 capsules.
This got me wondering about the reason for manufacturing tablets rather than capsules.
Capsules vs Tablets
Tablets are by far the most popular type of pill. Oral medications can be delivered safely and inexpensively.
These units are created by pressing one or more powdered substances into a solid, hard pill with a smooth coating. The pills break down in the digestive system.
Most tablets also contain additives to hold the tablet together and improve its taste, texture, or appearance.
The problem is tablets can irritate the digestive tract. Tablets can also break down inconsistently, reducing the effectiveness of medication and its overall absorption.
That said capsules have higher bioavailability. This means that capsules are more likely to reach your bloodstream. This may make capsules slightly more effective than tablet formats, but their shelf life is often less.
Testimonials from Testosterone 21 users
I can only find 1 review, but this is a 5-star review.
The customer reported a heightened libido with mild gains in the gym.
Potential Side Effects
You shouldn’t experience any side effects from the ingredients. My only concern is that we have no information whether the product is suitable for those on plant-based diets, and whether there are any potential allergens or contamination from the manufacturing process.
Comparing Testosterone 21 to other testosterone-boosting supplements
Testosterone 21 isn’t the worst product I have reviewed. It does at least have some ingredients included that will help support testosterone production in the correct doses. It is quite annoying that fadogia is included, as the available evidence from the research isn’t based on human studies.
Therefore, while this can have some benefits, it doesn’t compete with products such as Military Muscle and those in our best-rated testosterone boosters.
Conclusion
This product from Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals does have some benefits, these are namely three evidence-based ingredients in doses backed by positive results from studies on humans. However, this is only a 3 ingredient supplement (when you subtract the unproven fadogia agrestris) and many more products contain these three ingredients plus much more, with fewer capsules to take.
In addition, as we have seen, the tablet delivery method is fairly controversial when capsules are probably easier and cheaper to produce, which brings me on the the price point – it’s a bit expensive for what it is.
