English Public Health Advises Vitamin D Supplementation

Recent advice in England is that everyone should be supplementing their diet with vitamin D. All members of the population but especially babies, people with dark skin and those who cover up or do not go out in the sunshine to be taking 10mcg daily.

This is in light of talks with the UK Government regarding recommended levels of vitamin D in order to safeguard muscle and bone health in the population.

Further advice had been sought from the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) after its review of the evidence found regarding vitamin D and health.

What most people do not know is that vitamin D is actually a hormone converted by the skin from exposure to sunlight and is the main source for the majority of people.

During the spring and summer months, most people will receive enough of the hormone, however, once autumn and winter set in and the days become shorter people will have to become more reliant on supplements and a healthy, balanced diet.

This advice has been well received by The National Osteoporosis Society.

The National Osteoporosis Society has welcomed the guidance which is aimed at all members of society but in particular children and those from an ethnic background whose skin tone may be darker.
