Be Sensible About Steroid Use – A Guide
Anabolic steroids have certainly flared up recently, well, in the mainstream anyway. There’s a real stigma attached to them and it is not hard to see why, they’re banned in competitive sport globally (doesn’t stop them though), they tend to be associated with huge sized, angry, spotty, vascular wrestlers and bodybuilders with only Arnold Schwarzenegger really being able to bridge the gap between the average man/woman and the sport of bodybuilding even so, the truth behind his steroid use took a while to come out but due to his personality he managed to get away with it unscathed.
However, in the gyms globally and with the rise of this aesthetic, shredded physique image is going global via the rise of social media has drawn many young men (and women) to steroid use.
Depending where you are located globally steroid use can be a bit of a grey area. In the U.S it is banned and illegal to use and distribute, but then in places such as the U.K it is illegal to sell and distribute but not illegal to use, then there’s the whole legalities surrounding prohormones… Now wonder steroids are shrouded with such a cloak of mystery mixed views.
Either way, regardless of your opinion, your friend or even neighbor’s opinion or even the law steroids have been around and are staying around. They’re also readily available too
What are Anabolic Androgenic Steroids?
In a nutshell, these are a synthetic steroid hormone which replicates the function of testosterone to stimulate muscle growth and strength. These hormones are used to illegally lose weight and enhance physical performance. The drug is injected into the muscle—the shoulder, hip and thighs being the most common areas—and can also be consumed orally, however, oral administration puts more strain on the liver and can be toxic, as such oral steroids should only be taken for cycles of no more than 6 weeks.
There’s a good number of different types of steroid but dianabol and anvar are commonly used and heard about in gyms.
But what can these hormones do? Well they don’t just build muscle, they also help reduce fat cells and assist with recovery times meaning you can train hard for longer and then again the next day.
People often talk about steroid abuse, what is this?
Steroids can be used sensibly and (relatively) safely too. Now, I am going to play devils advocate and ask whether you really think The Rock, Dwayne Johnson doesn’t take them? I mean, take a look again, he is 44 years old with the ripped physique of a man half his age…
Steroids are to be cycled and usually a cycle of injected steroids last for 6-8 weeks (4-6 weeks for orals), if you push past these time frames you can put unnecessary strain on your organs such as the liver which processes the hormones, whereas a strict and measured cycling in place can be very effective and work within the users favor if you ignore cycling and continue with administering them lifelong damage can take place.
As steroids are such an unknown to many people the stories and myths appear, it isn’t difficult to get someone’s opinion on steroids even if they don’t have an opinion of global warming or their own government. So what’s the truth and what isn’t?
As with many things that you can consume, there are side effects. Even seemingly harmless things can be killers. Take food for example, overeating can lead to a myriad of issues and complications that can prove fatal. Steroids are no different. There most liely will be side effects, these can be anything from hair loss or growth, puffy or fatty nipples (known as gynecomastia), even testicle shrinkage. For women, their voices may drop and the clitoris may become enlarged.
However, like most things these can all be reversible once the user has stopped taking the hormones.
This is a funny one, there’s not actually any research or proof that steroids can make a seemingly normal, mild mannered person become aggressive and abusive towards people. However, like alcohol can, they can magnify someones already set-in traits and behavior. Steroids can actually improve a persons overall sense of well being, so anyone who is particularly angry whilst taking steroids most likely have some signs of behavioral issues to begin with. Also, bear in mind, once a person becomes noticeably bigger and more powerful, this new found strength and size can go to their head. However, as already mentioned, there is no link between steroid use and then unquantifiable anger.
It is a common misconception by many, even other gym goers that if a person is on steroids they don’t have to work as hard. Bullshit, that person over there is still lifting 400lbs, there’s no metal arms or jacks doing that for them. Steroids enable your body to work much harder. Do not think the hulking 300lbs + frame of Rich Piana is earned by sitting at home paying COD, because it isn’t.
