Marmite. Love It Or Hate It. You Could Need It…
Now, yeast extract spreads such as Marmite and Vegemite are not to everyone’s taste, but I fuckin’ love ’em! Mosquito’s apparently hate it though so eat some spread on toast if you’re heading to the jungle.
However, it also transpires that your brain may love them as much as I do. Not only are live bacteria and yeasts good for your digestive system, they are now known to be excellent for cognitive function according to groundbreaking research.
Infections such as diarrhea, IBS, eczema, allergies, colds and even tooth decay are though to be warded off in part by probiotics.
Tests using mice showed that probiotics were able to improve memory, learning as well as reducing anxiety.
It is thought that as there is a two-way continuous stream of communication between intestinal microflora, gastrointestinal tract and the brain via the nervous system, the immune system and hormones is able to boost cognition.
These results spurned on scientists to see how tests would fair with human studies.
A trial was organised with 52 male and female participants all suffering from Alzheimer’s and between the ages of 60 and 95 years old.
What was astounding is that the research discovered an administered daily dose of probiotic Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium bacteria was able to yield a significant improvement in examinations measuring cognitive impairment over a period of just 3 months.
This is the first study which has shown this in human studies and not just in rodents as beforehand.
Remember, yeast extract spreads also contain a host of B vitamins which are good for testosterone stimulation plus fat burning.
Believe it or not, but Marmite also packs a whopping 39g of protein per 100g…maybe it is time to ditch the Nutella.
This means that regardless of your stance on yeast extract spreads, it may well be a good idea to include it in your morning breakfast ritual on wholegrain toast for a three pronged attack.
